Replacing the Cutlass Bearing

This project to replace the cutlass bearing was compleated in March of 2011.
cutless1 Here are the tools I used to complete this project:
1 – 22mm socket from Ace Hardware
1 – 1/2″ threaded rod 12″ long
4 – 1/2″ nuts
8 – large 1/2″ washers
2 – pipe flange (center hole needs to be at least 1/2″ dia
1 – 1-1/2″ x 4″ pipe nipple
good 3/8″ or 1/2″ drive socket
cutless4 After removing the 2 set screws I assembled the parts shown above into this configuration.
cutless3 Another View. Then simply tighten the nut on the right.  this will pull the socket on the other end into the strut, pushing the cutlass bearing into the pipe nipple.
cutless2 The old cutlass bearing removed! To press the new bearing in you use a larger socket in place of the 22mm and place the new bearing where the pipe nipple was in the removing process.  Tighten the nut again until the bearing is in place.
