BS1 06 – Wrapping Up

When I wrote and published my last blog post (over) 2 months ago on April 1, the house had just gone under contract and we had spent a full week scrambling to rearrange our plans to accommodate my sudden home sale. In retrospect this was a natural, knee-jerk, reflex reaction to the shocking sudden notification of a major home location change, but in our case it was completely unnecessary. I’ll explain.

At that time we were still focused on keeping up the momentum of our original plan to depart in November 2023. We had decided we would move the boat (and us) to Florida where I could continue employment with my current firm, and we could finish our refit while living aboard. It seemed to be a good plan other than the timing of it all, which was genuinely horrid because of the rapidly approaching hurricane season and hot Florida summer heat.

By the first of May a month later, we were starting to look at things a bit differently. If you’ve been following our YouTube videos then you may have noticed that we moved our haul-out date from April to mid-May so that we could focus on a few bigger boat projects we had not previously anticipated addressing until later in our original plan.

Being able to accomplish these items early brought us the realization that we would also be looking at a much shorter overall refit timeline, and soon the idea that we no longer had to stick to the original sail away plan very gradually began to sink in. Things began rapidly falling together. We don’t need to go to Florida. We could leave for the Bahamas this year instead. We could completely alter our course!

I closed on the house at the end of May and we officially relocated to Wilmington (on paper). We still have until the 25th of June to wrap things up and vacate the Waxhaw property but it will be empty a few days ahead of time. We have made plans to sell, store, auction, donate, give away or trash the rest of our things. We’re ready for this part to be over.

We have still been continuing with more major boat work and are on schedule again for another haul out to finalize a few more out-of-water upgrades. When we re-splash this next time, we expect to head North up the coast to Wilmington where we plan to finish our interior refit before continuing on to our next adventures. With luck, we anticipate sailing to the Bahamas in December.

Today it’s mid-June and there’s still so much we have to show you! William has haul-out videos to finish editing and posting, and we still have a lot of interior work to do, so there’s lots of good stuff coming up, we just haven’t had time to post right now and we thought we’d spare everyone the joy of watching us sort through things and move. Boat stuff good! House stuff bad. It’s coming, we promise!

Until next time, fair winds!
